A couple of days ago, on the LiveJournal of Eyelid, I read about this:

http://susiemadrak.com/2005/10/04/17/30/the-scarlet-letter/

In brief, the state of Indiana wanted to pass a law preventing unmarried (read: dirty lesbian or scary homo) individuals from conceiving children via artificial means. Additionally, the theoretical law would have required even heterosexual married couples attempting to conceive via artificial means to jump through the same hoops as couples attempting to adopt or foster children, even if the artificial conception process made exclusive use of their own genetic material (her eggs, his sperm).

About a day or so later this happened:

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051005/NEWS01/51005006/1006

The legislator, Senator Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, abruptly dropped her support of the bill that she authored, citing that "the issue had become more complex than expected" and withdrawing it from committee consideration.

I translate this as follows:

There are certain breeds of fucktarded politician who count as one of their bedrock personal beliefs that there's a Vast Homosekshul Conspiracy dedicated exclusively to turning their sons and daughters into flaming queens and carpet munchers or, failing that, to breed the next generation of Homosekshul Conspirator infants using the unsuspecting assistance of otherwise heterosexual eggs and sperm. They see this conspiracy everywhere, from music and movies, to video games and books, and they are far more obsessed with this idea than can possibly be good for them. They also tend to forget some of their own rhetoric, namely that the godless fag-ridden Northeast (particularly Massachusetts, but inclusive of Vermont and most of the rest of the original thirteen colonies)and godless fag-ridden California (specifically San Francisco) are home to approximately 96% of the entire gay population of the lower 48. (Everyone knows There Are No Homosexuals In Rugged Manly Alaska -- and, shagging another husky young man on a crab-fishing boat on the Berring Sea after an incredibly near-death experience is not a lifestyle choice.)

That leaves about 4% of the gay population to be spread across the rest of the country, which, if you break it down in an entirely nonscientific fashion, means that Indiana has a net gay population of THREE. AND THEY'RE PROBABLY ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!

Whereas a startlingly large percentage of the married heterosexual adults of childbearing/rearing intent have responsibly waited until their late 20s/early 30s to try and have children...and have discovered that, surprisingly, this isn't as easy as it might have been at nineteen. A lot of these couples turn to artificial means of fertilization. A lot of these couples have some amount of disposable income to throw around. A lot of these couples are registered voters. A lot of these couples are REPUBLICANS! Who have no desire to have the Big Republican Government Nanny State intruding into their uterus!

The very thought!

There's your 'more complex' for you.

I always loved the notion that straight people can be "corrupted" by having gay sex. Honey, if all it takes to switch you over is one grapple with someone of the same gender, you ain't so straight.

In lieu of Communists, it now falls to homosexuals to seek out and corrupt our precious bodily fluids...

One of the tragedies of the modern Republican party is that they've discovered what the Democrats knew all along: As long as it's not too onerous, the bulk of the populace will accept Nanny government that does the bulk of your thinking for you. Every now and again you get something where the party oversteps its bounds in passing off its particular morality on a population who doesn't agree and doesn't approve. The Dems got their taste of this during their push for Gay Marriage - It was decided that they could foist these decisions on the majority, probably because the pro-Marriage POV was the majority in large urban areas. Whether you agree or disagree with Gay Marriage (I'm personally in favor - if it's a civil contract, technically anyone should be able to enter into it), the majority of Americans do not appear to approve, and they reacted poorly. I think your analysis is accurate, I just wish we had more general rebellions against the nanny state, regardless of party affiliation.

The blogs exploded on this one

Another thing that happened was that this story hit the liberal blogs and people went BATSHIT. I can just IMAGINE the number of letters and emails and phone calls they got -- both from inside and outside of Indiana. This hit every major liberal/progressive blog and online community in a matter of days.

And the fit hit the shan.

So I consider it a victory for the Good Guys (and Gals) -- I suspect even in Indiana there are people who were fucking outraged, and as you said, many of them were probably straight Republicans who didn't want the state "approving" their decision to use reproductive assistance under ANY circumstance.

Yeah, team. :-)
